Nautical rustic decor

Gina Luker over at The Shabby Creek Cottage made a beautiful ottoman from an old coffee table. Her idea and tutorial is brilliant, so you should check it out!
I thought I would share this nautical themed project put together by Stephanie Anne D'Entremont our resident fashionista here in Acadie! Steph's final product became a bench made from an old lobster crate.
If you get inspired, don't forget The Shabby Creek Cottage's tutorial for a coffee table and crack on.

Wouldn't this giant barn door make a perfect accent wall or room divider?

What a lovely country cabinet. Would you keep it this colour or freshen it up with a new coat of paint?

I searched online for a recipe that would  be perfect for a Harvest Festival.
I found an pumpkin pie fudge recipe that sounded appetizing.

Christmas in July?

Wow! Here in Canada dollar stores have already begun stacking their shelves with Christmas paraphernalia and it's only September 19! I think they begin earlier and earlier every year. Soon it will literally be Christmas in July!
In your opinion, what would be a decent and acceptable time to begin the commercialism of Christmas?

Birthday party theme perhaps?

I was reading my Facebook news feed and found this gem of a photo! (I asked permission to use the photo) I think that Hello Kitty makes for a cute birthday party theme, and what better way to put it all together than with these face paintings. Everybody has an artistic friend that could pull this off! What do you think?

22 Halloween Decorations Made Out Of Recycled Pallets • 1001 Pallets

Is your child suffering from ADHD?

Do any of these complaints sound familiar to you?  “My child is struggling in school… the teacher complains that they don’t complete their class work, can’t follow directions, and are frequently daydreaming.  Their grades are below average, yet I know that they are intelligent.  Homework takes forever, and is a constant battle.  If this were not enough, they are frequently getting in trouble at school, and it’s the same at home.  The poor kid can’t get a break, and the family is constantly in an uproar. We always dread the start of the next school year, and things seem to be getting steadily worse.”
If any of the academic performance and/or behavioral parts of this statement sound familiar...

Halloween treats perhaps?

Halloween treats perhaps?

What you will need:
  • 8 wooden chopsticks
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2tsp vanilla
  1. Bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Dip apples into boiling water for a few seconds then wipe down with paper towel to remove wax from peel. Set apples aside; when completely cooled insert a wooden chopstick firmly into the bottom of each apple for a handle.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Stir all but the vanilla in a sauce pan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and reduce to medium heat. Cook until candy thermometer reaches 248 F (120 C) 25-30 mins; stir constantly to prevent burning. To check for proper consistency; a teaspoon of the syrup dropped in a glass of cold water should form a ball.
  4. Remove from heat and add vanilla to the mixture.
  5. Swirl your cooled apples into the syrup and place on parchment paper
  6. Enjoy!

Take your old lamps and revamp them from bright lights to soft ambient lighting!
  1. Unplug your lamp!
  2. Remove lamp shade
  3. remove light bulb and cord
You should be left with just the bare base and stem. Now what?
Depending on the base, you can lightly sand, but if you have a great primer slap it on. (I used good ole Modge Podge that dries clear so as to keep the original colour of the base)
Do you want a chic look or perhaps you'd prefer a shabby chic?
I wanted an old weathered look so I coated the entire thing with a crackle product and once dry, added my colours of choice. Both sconces were painted with chalk paint and look awesome!
I purchased some terracotta pot bases that I painted and firmly attached at the top of the stems. Two stemless wine glass finished the look and hold each a votive candle. Voila!
Great up cycle project for your home and make for thoughtful gifts that will be appreciated for years to come.

Pallet Wood Canvas?

Pallet wood on canvas?

Pallets are my favourite materials for up cycling into art, furniture, ... BUT makes for heavy wall art so I decided to create my own light weight "pallet" wall hanging with nothing but a blank canvas, some paint and my imagination, of course. Furthermore my nautical glass bobbles artwork will never shatter.
A mere canvas is just $1.00-$3.00 depending on the size, and a box of acrylic paints is approximately the same price, (dollar store) so feel free to splurge and practise this technique. Be patient, and have fun!Nautical glass bobbles that will never break?

The Vintage Buoy

The vintage buoy

Here is another piece of wall art I painted a few month ago. Here's how to acquire this look:
With a dollar store canvas, paint a base background and then literally dab different colors of paint "willy nilly" throughout  the canvas in diagonal strokes. (This will appear like weathered painted wooden shingles.) Use a line brush  and paint black diagonal and horizontal lines to create the appearance of separate shingles.(Tip: squiggly triangular shapes applied to the  bottom corners of your shingles will create a chipped look.)
Next I used my paint pallet(You can freehand or trace any shape you prefer) to trace the shape of the buoy. Once you've shaped your buoy, paint it a solid color. (This first layer of paint will be the color you see through the "chipped paint" on your buoy.) Your next step is to apply a layer of crackle medium, letting it dry and following with another layer of paint. (This last layer of paint will be the color of your buoy.) Within seconds crackles will appear!

State of Emergency!

South western Nova Scotia is experience an ongoing drought. This article highlights the struggles people are experiencing here in the village of Pubnico and the neighbouring counties.
This pictures shows what we call a fish box, which is/are filled with water every few days, (or more often depending on the size of the family). My 17 year old son works at Evan's Fresh Seafoods Evan's Fresh Seafoods here in Pubnico, which graciously lent us 2 of these boxes.
Once filled, the box is connected to a hose that runs to the bottom of our well, through a separate hose connected to our water pump. Three minute showers and doing laundry a half an hour away from home has been the norm now for 4 weeks! (Longer for others)

Frugal Finds are Devine!

Here in Atlantic Canada we shop at Guy's Frenchys to save on clothing, kitchen ware, books and more. I found this object on one such visit to this store. I was not keen on the chrome look so I lightly sanded it and then spray painted it white.metal shelf, plant stand, organizer
I searched the shelves at my local dollar store and found some terracotta pots that fit nicely into the rings on the stand. I added a crackle finish to the bare pots and followed with a layer of paint.

Once completed I decided to use this little organizer in my bathroom. Voila!
